Stage fright, public speaking or any performance is a valid fear. No.1 fear in USA is speaking in public.

What causes it?

One word “Beliefs”, specifically limiting beliefs.

What is a belief?

A belief is a statement of reality that we believe to be true. A limiting belief is one that limits our reality. So if we believe that its wrong to make mistake, how are we going to act when we go on stage?

Example

If someone had a belief that dogs are dangerous. How would they act around dogs? Fearful right? How would they act around big dogs? Fearful. Small dogs? Fearful (maybe a little bit less, but still fearful)

Would you call them a coward for being scared of small dogs, or would you say they are acting in line with what they believe?
